12. BASEMENT

Standing at the mountain-base
I kept watching for a long time
The mountain was all tall and massive
I waited there itself
One can see the mountain from all sides
of our place
Viewing it from a distance
we won’t see its base.
But, the mountain-base never worried about it
It had no grievance at all of its absence
when I watch so.
In mountain-climbing
the base remains the start
and the close.

மலை யடிவாரம்

மலையடிவாரத்தில் வெகுநேரம் பார்த்திருந்தேன்
மலை மிக மிக உயரமாகத் தெரிந்துகொண்டிருந்தது
அங்கேயே காத்திருந்தேன்
ஊரின் எல்லாப் பக்கங்களிலிருந்தும்
மலையைப் பார்க்கலாம்
தொலைவிலிருந்து பார்க்கும்வேளை
மலையடிவாரம் தெரியாது
ஆனால் அதைப் பற்றி ஒரு நாளும் கவலைப்பட்டதில்லை மலையடிவாரம்
நான் பார்க்கும்போது அது இல்லையென்பதில் அதற்கு ஒரு நாளும் குற்றச்சாட்டு கிடையாது
மலையை ஏறத்தொடங்கும் ஆரம்பமும்
மலையடிவாரத்தில்தான்
மலையிலிருந்து இறங்கும்போது அதுதான் முடிவாகமுடிந்தும் நிற்கிறது

13. THE CHILD IN ITS FATHER’S SHIRT

Getting inside its father’s shirt
The child was trying to become the father.
That the father is wearing the shirt of his child
which has grown along with the father
_ his friends make fun of him.
The son goes to office, wearing his father’s shirt.
Wearing his son’s trendy shirts the father tries to
Appear youthful.
The son who had worn his father’s shirt
Implies his desire to become a father.
Thus Time keeps enjoying
The father’s shirt
And that of the son
Turning all too hastily
Time-worn.

அப்பாவின் சட்டைக்குள் குழந்தை

நுழைந்து அப்பாவாக முயற்சித்துக்கொண்டிருந்தது
அப்பாவோடு வளர்ந்த குழந்தையின் சட்டையை அப்பா அணிந்துகொண்டிருப்பதாக
நண்பர்கள் பகடி செய்கிறார்கள்
அப்பாவின் சட்டையை மாற்றிப்போட்டுக்கொண்டு அலுவகம் போகிறன் பிள்ளை
பிள்ளையின் காலத்திற்கேற்ற பேஷன் சட்டைகளை உடுத்திக்கொண்டு இளமையின் மெருகை காட்டிக்கொள்ள விரும்புகிறார் அப்பா
அப்பாவின் சட்டையைப் போட்டுக்கொண்ட பிள்ளை
குறிப்பாலுணர்த்துகிறான் அப்பாவாக மாறவிரும்புவதை
இப்படியாக இந்த விளையாட்டை
ரசித்துக்கொண்டிருக்கிறது காலம்
அப்பாவின் சட்டையும்
பிள்ளையின் சட்டையும்
வேகமாக நைந்துகொண்டிருப்பதை

14. THE NOON-MAN’S SMOKY PLAY

A man keeps watching from beneath a towering over-bridge
The wagons going at so great a height;
also their hues and shades;
furthermore their varying speeds
The noon-man kept on watching
the cars that whizzed past along the roads
underneath the bridge
driving away the noon
in a hot chase
When he became bored
buying a cigarette from a roadside shop,
he lit it.
Inhaling the first smoke deeply,
relishing it
he blew it out.

The smoke taking its own time flew
and dispersed in the air.
Following that
commencing the game of
inhaling and exhaling smoke
when he was turning fatigued,
in the last curl of smoke blown out
the over-bridge vanishing,
in a few moments
the noon-man almost ran
terribly agitated.
He remained watching the traffic-police
blowing his whistle
and chasing him in hot pursuit.

மத்தியானவாசியின் புகை விளையாட்டு

உயரமான மேம்பாலத்தின் அடியிலிருந்து
ஒருவன் பார்த்துக்கொண்டிருக்கிறான்
உயரமாக போய்க்கொண்டிருந்த வாகனங்களை
மற்றும் அதன் வண்ணங்களை
மற்றும் அதன் வேகங்களை
பாலத்தின் கீழிருந்த சாலையிலும் மத்தியானத்தை விரட்டிக்கொண்டு போன கார்களையும் பார்த்தபடியே இருந்தான் அந்த மத்தியானவாசி.
சலிப்புற்ற ஒரு கணத்தில் சாலையோர பெட்டிக்கடையில் சில்லறைகொடுத்து ஒரு சிகரெட் வாங்கி கொளுத்தினான்.
முதல் புகையை ஆழ்ந்து இழுத்து ரசித்தவாறே
புகையை வெளியே ஊதினான்
புகை அதன் வேகத்தில் மெல்ல காற்றில் கலைந்தது
அடுத்தடுத்து புகையை இழுப்பதும்
அதை வெளியே ஊதுவதுமாக ஒரு விளையாட்டைத் தொடங்கி அதை அவனே சலித்துக்கொண்டிருந்தவேளையில்
கடைசியாக விட்ட சுருள் சுருளான புகையில்
மேம்பாலம் மறைய
சில கணங்களில்
பதட்டமாக விரைந்தான் மத்தியானவாசி.
போக்குவரத்துக் காவலர் வீசில் ஊதி அவனைப் பின்னாலேயே விரட்டிக்கொண்டு போவதைப் பார்த்தவாறேயிருந்தான் அவன்.

THOSE WHO KEEP ON WASHING THEIR HANDS

In bathrooms
In the kitchen wash-basin
In toilets
and everywhere else
they have kept dettol solutions in bottles
As soon as you wake up in the morning
First you should wash the hands and then only
brush the teeth.
After attending to nature’s call at the loo
you should wash your hands with great caution
focusing on your utmost safety
then, after taking bath,
should squeeze the dettol soap-solution
and wash impeccably
Each time you should wash for twenty seconds.
First you should pour the solution in your palm
and spread and press it slowly oh softly
Then increase the speed, entwining your palms
tightly pressing against each other.
First wash the left palm with the right
and then the right with the left
Pressing, squeezing, wiping.
Then, repeat the exercise
upon the outer portion of the palms
From right to left and left to right;
Spare no spot but wipe hard in between the fingers
and on the rims and edges of nails.
Thus whenever there is time in a day
they go on washing their hands
trying to be clean to the core.
They keep cleaning the hands for ever.
Over and over
pouring water all over
saying that germs shouldn’t be there
they keep on butchering bacteria
and
fellow humans
washing their hands off…
all the time….
Oh my…..

சாப்பாட்டு அறை வாஷ்பேஸின்களில்
கழிவறைகளில் என எல்லாயிடங்களிலும்
கைகளைக் கழுவிக் கொள்வதற்காக நவீன டெட்டால் சோப்பு நீரை பாட்டில்களில் அடைத்து வைத்திருக்கிறார்கள்
காலையில் எழுந்ததும் முதலில் கைகளைக் கழுவிக்கொண்டுதான் பல் துலக்க வேண்டும்
கழிவறைகளில் காலைக்கடன்களை கழித்ததும்
கைகளைக் கழுவிக்கொள்ள வேண்டும்
பின் குளித்து முடித்ததும் ஒருமுறை அதீத பாதுகாப்பு கருதி கைகளில் டெட்டால் சோப்பு நீரை பிதுக்கி சுத்தமாக கழுவிக்கொள்ள வேண்டும்.

ஒவ்வொருமுறையும் இருபது நொடிகள் கழுவுதல் வேண்டும்
முதலில் உள்ளங்கையில் சோப்புநீரை விட்டு
மெதுவாக மிக மெதுவாக தேய்த்து
பின் வேகவேகமாக தேய்த்துவிடவும்
வலது கையிலிருந்து இடது கையையும்
இடது கையிலிருந்து வலது கையையும் தேய்க்கவும்
உள்ளங்கைகளை சுத்தமாக அழுத்தி தேய்க்கவும்
பின் கைகளின் மேற்புறத்தில் இதேபோல இடவலமாக வலஇடமாக தேய்க்கவும்
விரல்களுக்கிடையில் நகக்கண்களுக்கிடையில் என ஒரு இடம் விடாமல் தேய்க்கவும்
இப்படியாக ஒரு நாளின் வாய்ப்புகள் கிடைக்கும்போதெல்லாம்
சுத்தம் சுத்தமென கைகளைக் கழுவிக்கொண்டேயிருக்கிறார்கள்.
கைகளைக் கழுவிக்கொண்டேயிருக்கிறார்கள் ஓயாமல்
கழுவிக்கொண்டேயிருக்கிறார்கள்.
கிருமிகள் ஒட்டிக்கொள்ளக்கூடாதென சொல்லியவாறே
ஓயாமல் கொல்கிறார்கள் பாக்டீரியாக்களை
மற்றும்
சக மனிதர்களை
ஓயாமல் கைகளைக் கழுவிக்..,,,,,

PHANTOM FOE

They were rehearsing boxing
From a corner I was watching it
They were punching at those in front.
The wrestlers
jumping and leaping to and fro,
front and back
rehearsing hard
would be forever
giving their make-believe foes
ferocious shadow-punches.
So early that morn
the playground was overcrowded.
With the nose broken
the trainer’s face turns bloody.
The other coaches come running
shouting that the practice is over
The foe escapes then, from there
on a fantasy flight.

பாவனை எதிரி

குத்துச்சண்டை பயிற்சியை மேற்கொண்டிருக்கிறார்கள்
ஒரு ஓரத்திலிருந்து அதை நான் பார்த்துக்கொண்டிருந்தேன்
முன்னால் இருந்தவர்களை நோக்கி
குத்திக்கொண்டிருக்கிறார்கள்
முன்னும் பின்னுமாக குதித்து
கடும் பயிற்சியை மேற்கொண்ட குத்துச் சண்டை வீரர்கள்
இப்போதும் அப்போதும்
எதிரிலில்லாத எதிரியை நோக்கி
குத்துகிறார்கள் பாவனையாக
அவ்வளவு அதிகாலையில் நிறைந்திருக்கிறது விளையாட்டு மைதானம்
மூக்குடைபட்டு இரத்தம் தெறித்து
வழிகிறது பயிற்சியாளனின் முகம்
பயிற்சி நிறைந்துவிட்டதாக கத்திக்கொண்டு ஓடிவருகிறார்கள்
மற்ற பயிற்சியாளர்கள்
அப்போது பாவனையாக தப்பித்து ஓடுகிறான்
எதிரி வீரன்
